Hello folks,

Welcome to the Jericho Farmers' Market's 11th season!

The Jericho Farmers' Market (formerly known as the Mills Riverside Farmers Market) is open every Thursday, June through September, 3:00- 6:30.  We are excited about how well last year went and are looking forward to a great market season this year.

For those of you who may not have made it to the market last year, we've grown!   Last year we consistently had 18-22 vendors, up by 20% from previous years and we anticipate growing again this year.  We had a number of vendors report that they'd had as much as a 50% increase in sales from previous years.   We did a couple of "crowd counts" last year and found that we often had 200-250 people at the market.  These counts were not exact and only ever covered at most 2 hours  of the 3 1/2 hours we're open, but they give you a general idea of the traffic you can expect.   Even on rainy days, we've found we have a devoted customer base, who will come out to the Market!

New this year: we are applying for a grant from NOFA to have an EBT/Debit machine at our market. This machine will allow our patrons to use their EBT/Debit cards to buy Market Tokens which they can use like cash to make purchases at the market.

This means customers with Debit cards can make purchase without individual vendors having credit card capabilities.  How many times have you had a potential customer at your booth say "I wish I could by some, but I'm out of cash" or ask if you take credit cards?  Now they can get market tokens and make those additional purchases.  We are confident this new service will mean additional sales at the market!

For those buying tokens with their EBT card (used to access their 3SquaresVermont benefits) it means that, for the first time, they will be able to use their benefits to purchase local food at our market!  We are excited to be able to offer this service to our neighbors who otherwise might not have access to fresh local produce.

We plan to continue and expand the weekly music.   If you know of local acoustic musicians who might be interested in performing have them contact me.  We can offer a small payment, but it is mostly an opportunity for local musicians to play for their neighbors, get exposure, sell CDs  and help make the Jericho Farmers' Market more festive.  If there were musicians you particularly enjoyed last year, let me know and we'll try to get them back.  We are also hoping to find some local businesses to sponsor the music at the market.  If you know of any local businesses I should approach please send me their contact information.

Attached you will find the NEW Rules and Regulations, we have  made some significant changes so please do read these.  Also attached are applications for  Seasonal Vender Permits and Day Vendor Permits. Applications for Vendor Permits are due April 1 for priority consideration.

Feel free to contact me with any question you have.  Looking forward to hearing from you soon!

Kelly King, Market Manager

P.S.  Please feel free to forward this to anyone you think might be interested in becoming a vendor at the Jericho Farmers' Market.  We are especially hoping to add a few more vegetable, fruit and meat vendors this year and are looking for a honey producer to join our market.   If you no longer wish to be on our mailing list please let me know.

2012 Jericho Farmers Market

(formerly known as the Mills Riverside Farmers’ Market)

General Information and Rules for Vendors

Location:  Mills Riverside Park on Route 15 in Jericho, Vermont.

Schedule: June thru September,  Thursdays 3:00-6:30pm, rain or shine

Mission:  It is the purpose of the Jericho Farmers’ Market Association to operate a farmers' market in the Jericho/Underhill area. This organization is committed to providing a sales outlet for local farmers, food producers and crafters, while providing area residents with access to these high-quality, local products in a festive, family-friendly, community forum.

Vendor Permits:

1. All vendors must have a Seasonal Vendor Permit or a Day Vendor Permit.

2. All vendors must be Vermont residents. Vendor Permits are awarded on the basis of vendors' proximity to the Market, number of other vendors supplying a particular product, quality of their product and seniority. Preference for new vendors will be given to local producers (towns within the Chittenden East School district).

3. We are a producers’ market; products sold should be made, raised, or grown by the vendor.

4. The Market will strive to have a least half of our vendors offering local agricultural products (vs crafts, prep. food)

5. New vendors may attend the Market on a trial basis for one day, paying a Day Vendor fee (which can be applied towards a seasonal fee) after the first day they must either apply for a Seasonal Vendor Permit or a Day Vendor Permit.

Eligible items for Sale:

a) Vermont-grown fresh produce and agricultural products: vegetables, flowers, herbs, fruits, plants, maple syrup, honey, eggs, poultry, meat - all must be grown or produced by the vendor. All products should be of the highest quality.

b) Prepared foods and baked goods: must be produced by the vendor and be of high quality and made with fresh Vermont ingredients whenever possible (i.e. Vermont maple syrup, fresh cream, fresh local eggs, etc.).

c) Agricultural 'value-added' products such as yarn, wool, jams, jellies, home-canned garden foods, pickles, and cider: must be produced by the vendor.

d) High-quality, locally-produced crafts.

e) Bedding plants and hanging baskets: must be grown by vendors for at least 8 weeks. Dried flowers: must be grown or gathered by the vendor.

f) Locally grown fruits and vegetables not available from other vendors may possibly be sold at the Market Booth as a service to our patrons and as a fundraiser for the Market.

Note:  Local nonprofit agricultural/nutrition oriented organizations, civic and/or youth groups may set up, subject to space availability. These groups may not sell products that directly compete with existing vendors. (With the exception of “Kids’ Day” when there maybe be some direct competition in some items).

General Rules:

1. Each vendor shall comply with all the rules and regulations of the State of Vermont and the Jericho Underhill/ Park District, as they relate to the products they sell (e.g. State ID #, sales tax, labeling and processing laws).Vendors who sell by weight must use legal-for-trade scales.

2. Vendors are encouraged to carry liability insurance.

3. Vendors should not bring dogs to the Market.

4. Vendors should not smoke while vending at the Market (within 100 feet of the market).

5. Food vendors must provide a visible trash container for customers' use and remove at the end of the day.

6. All employees of vendors must be given a copy of these rules, so they are aware of the policies of the market.

7.All vendors (including Day Vendors) are REQUIRED to report gross sales on a weekly basis. Individual vendor’s information will be kept confidential and used only in composite to comply with reporting for grants, state/NOFA surveys, Federal programs, insurance and market growth analysis. These figures should be given to the Market Manager at the close of the market day or emailed by Saturday evening at the latest.

Vendor Space:

1. Displays (including canopy tents) must fit within a 10’x10 space. At the manager’s discretion, space may be layed out with a larger dimension, but vendors should be prepared to fit in a 10x10 area.

2. Space assignments will be done by the Market Manager based on flow, seniority, products sold, market appearance and attendance.

3. Each vendor must maintain an orderly and clean display.

4. Canopies, umbrellas and tents must be securely fastened to the ground with stakes or weights.

5. Vendors may use their vehicles as part of their display or may park one vehicle behind their display.

Set-up and Breakdown:

1. Vendors may arrive at 2:00 to start setting up their stands. Vendors must arrive by 2:45 for setup unless they have made prior arrangements with the Market Manager.

2. Vendors must not block access to other vendors' spaces during setup.

3. Vendors must not drive through the middle of the site once set-up has begun or during breakdown. Please drive around the outside of the circle of vendors. Vendors must not enter or leave the site directly from Rt 15. You must enter via the driveway, through the stone gates and exit through the other drive at the end of the field. Always use caution and drive very slowly through the park and on site.

4. Vendors must stay until the end of the Market at 6:30. If a vendor is out of product, they must leave their tent and table up to avoid “holes” in the market.

5. All debris must be removed, by the vendor, from their individual site.

6. All vendors must be off the premises no later than 8:00 pm.

Seasonal Vendors:

Attendence:

It is expected that Seasonal Vendors will attend all or at least most days the market is open, unless other arrangements have been made in writing with the market manager and the board. The Jericho Farmers’ Market happens rain or shine, please be prepared for rain, wind, cold or heat (or all 4 in the same day!)

1. Seasonal vendors not planning to attend the Market are asked to contact the Market Manager as early as possible in the week, but no later than 6 pm Wednesday, so that the market layout can be finalized by Thursday morning. It is assumed that, if you have not notified the Manager by this time, YOU WILL BE AT THE MARKET THE NEXT DAY. If you try to notify the manager by email and have not received confirmation that your message was received by 6pm Wednesday, you must contact the manager by phone 802 343-9778 or

802 899-5043.

2. Vendors who are the sole providers of type of merchandise at the Market must notify the Market Manager of anticipated absences no later than noon on Tuesday, so that a substitute vendor can be found or that Day Vendors can be notified of the availability of a space.

3. On the day of the Market, the space of any vendor who has not arrived by 2:45 pm may be re-assigned. Vendors who arrive after that time may not be able to be accommodated, or may have to wait until it is convenient for the manager to create a space for them.

4. Vendors who fail to show up on market day without having notified the market manager in a timely fashion will be given a warning. A vendor with a second un-notified absence will pay an administration fine of $5 to return to the market. A vendor with a third un-notified absence will have their case brought before the Board of Directors for review, at the risk of losing their Vending Permit and forfeiting any payments made for the year.

Day Vendors:

1. A limited number of Day Vendor spaces may be available on a first-call, first-served basis at the discretion of the Market Manager.

2. After a trial week, Day Vendors must apply to be juried for a Day Vendor Permit. Returning Day Vendors are strongly urged to apply for a Day Vendor Permit at the beginning of the season so that their permit will be in place before the season starts.

3. Once a Day Vendor has a permit they may attend week-by-week, as space is available, by contacting the Manager by noon on Wednesday to reserve a space.

4. Any Day Vendor who HAS reserved a space for a given market day but fails to show up will be required to pay a $5 administration fee and may risk losing their Day Vendor Permit.

Fees:

Season Vendor Permit : $100 for 17 weeks, June-May for a 10’x 10’ space

Day Vendor Permit: $20 per week for a 10’x10’ space (paid week-by-week, before set-up)

In the past vendors were required to become “Members” of the market, this is no longer the case. We are trying a new structure for the organization. If you would like to be part of the governing Membership, who, in turn, elect the board of directors, please email the market for more information.
